Scuba diving on the Aliwal Shoal is nothing like anywhere else in Africa. The shoal is a rocky reef comprising of an ancient sand dune, that disappeared under the waves in the last ice age many thousands of years ago. It’s been rated as one of the best sub-tropical dive sites worldwide. The 5 km long shoal has all sorts of marine life from nudibranchs to whales that visit us in the winter months. Every dive is unique. This is one of those bucket-list destinations that all scuba diving enthusiasts should experience in their lifetime.

Diving the Aliwal Shoal
You will need to have a PADI Open Water qualification to be able to dive the Aliwal Shoal. Because the dive sites are within a marine protected area, every scuba diver needs to purchase a permit that can easily be obtained at our local post office or at our Beach Office. If you need to rent gear we have a full gear rental facility although you are welcome to bring your own gear if that suites you better. Most dives are done in the morning with double-tank dives (2 per day) weather permitting. You can discuss with the dive-masters where are the best spots to dive based on conditions and diving experience. We also offer Nitrox for deep dives if you have qualified and want to extend your dive times.
Shark Diving Experience
We offer baited shark dives with Oceanic Black-tip Sharks and are often visited by Tiger Sharks and on the occasion we see Great White Sharks, Dusky Sharks, Bull Sharks and a variety of other sharks depending on the time of years. Speak with us about options to shark dive if you are interested in diving with these amazing creatures. During out winter period there are hundreds of Ragged tooth sharks on the Aliwal Shoal where you are able to get up close to these graceful creatures.
